LAREDO, TEXAS (LPD) – The Laredo Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation of a missing child. The case is complex and has occurred over several years.
The Laredo Police Juvenile Enforcement Team has under taken the investigation which has led them to various different cities throughout Texas.
The missing child has not been found and the investigation needs the community’s assistance in bringing in any information and possibly a known location where this child can be found.
The case history: In 2005, Roberto Estevis and his common law wife, Maria Alejandrina Valverde had 6 children. The oldest child, a female, is from Maria’s previous relationship. The 6 children were removed by CPS due to drug usage by both parents. In Feb. 2006, a seventh child, Thomas Estevis, D.O.B. 02-20-06, was born to the couple and at the hospital the baby tested cocaine positive and was immediately removed from his parents as well at that time.
After passing mandatory requirements and various home visits in Dec. 2007, all 7 children were reunited with Maria and Roberto.
In Nov. 2010, Roberto was arrested for DUI with one of his children in the vehicle. The police went to his residence to notify Maria Valverde and have her take custody of the child that was with Roberto at the time of his arrest. The police found Maria Valverde was under the influence of narcotics.
CPS was called to the location immediately and they removed the 6 children who were present in the home at that time. Thomas was the only child not present at the home.
According to his parents, Thomas was sent to live with a relative in Georgia. So at this time CPS took custody of Thomas on paper. In Dec. 2010, CPS was awarded Temporary Managing Conservator of all the children, including Thomas and the question of Thomas’ location was brought up again.
Both parents, Roberto and Maria, claimed that Thomas was still with a relative in Georgia which was never verified. In Jan. 2011, Maria Valverde passed away.
In October 2011 CPS petitions the court to dismiss the Temporary Managing Conservator of Thomas Estevis since the child had never been in their possession.
In Nov. 2011, CPS filed a missing child case with the Laredo Police Department. Since some considerable time had elapsed since anyone had actually seen Thomas, the investigation was extremely difficult and led to various possibilities.
Every possible lead in this investigation has been followed up and verified. This case has led detectives across multiple jurisdictions throughout the State. The investigation has also included notification of Thomas to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by Laredo Police.
Included in this release is computer generated age progression images of what Thomas might look like today.
