Renewed effort to bring Vanessa Smith back home

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Years after a North Valley girl disappeared, her mother is still holding onto hope, her daughter will be found alive. Vanessa Smith was fifteen when she disappeared 14 years ago. Vanessa Smith's mother hasn't stopped looking for her daughter since the day she disappeared. Now, she is trying to raise money, to help with the ongoing search. Bev Smith greeted law enforcement officials and other supporters at Merced's Courthouse Park Saturday. She planned this fundraiser, which included a raffle and food sales as a way to thank them for their efforts over the past fourteen years -- and encourage people to continue looking for her daughter. "I believe she's alive in my heart. And not alive in my heart. But, she's alive out there. I know it. And know she's alive with all my heart," said Bev. "I never doubted that." Vanessa disappeared on May 31, 1997 while walking near the family's Winton home. Since then, leads have come and gone. Merced County Undersheriff, Tom Cavallero says while the department can't afford to work on the case full-time -- they appreciate the family's tireless efforts. "You know, I think anything helps if it enhances awareness because you just can't predict who knows what," said Cavallero. "And, undoubtedly, someone knows something." A $50 thousand reward is still being offered in Vanessa's case. Her mother hopes to raise enough money to place two billboards -- throughout the area to keep the search going. "Times are hard now, and we understand that," said Bev. "But, we do want her home and all the love and support we get from everybody. We can make that billboard happen." Bev needs $4 thousand to reach her goal. Family members say it's a small price to pay for the chance to finally have some peace of mind. Vanessa's brother, Rudy Smith said, "There's hope for everyone and especially when it's your own family. The hope is higher. You want to see them again." Vanessa's family has set up an account to help fund their efforts. New appeal for information about Steve's case 9th May 2011 Steven's case was today featured on the BBC's Missing programme. It is hoped that this new appeal, which also included the first ever airing of an age progression image, will provide a timely reminder for anyone visiting Crete this summer to keep their eyes and ears peeled for Steve or anyone that they feel may be him. If you you are visiting Crete this year please spare 5 minutes of your time to download a poster that you can distribute whilst over there. The family would like to thank everyone at Leopard films and the BBC for their support and also the many people who have sent kind messages of support. We truly do not walk alone. Kate made an emotional plea for support from the government, not just for herself but for all the parents who have missing children. Kate McCann has said she feels the chances of her daughter Maddie being found are improving (PA) Maddie went missing from a hotel room in the Algarve, Portugal while on a family holiday in 2007. Despite raising significant public support and hiring private detectives, her parents have never found her. Asking the government to provide more support for families dealing with a missing child, Kate said: 'To be left in the dark when your child is missing and at risk is unbearable ... Many people have been worn down by this process because it's absolutely relentless and exhausting.' However, she said she feels more positive about the possibility of Maddie being tracked after Scotland Yard was put on the case, saying she felt 'the chances of her being found are improving'. . The Daily Telegraph previously reported a team of 30 detectives could be put on the case, costing millions of pounds. She was joined in her calls for help by the mother of Luke Durbin, who disappeared five years ago after a night out in Ipswich, and Sarah Godwin, whose son went missing on the way to work in New Zealand in 1992. .
